What is an L Visa?

The L Visa is a nonimmigrant work visa that enables companies to transfer employees from their foreign offices to their U.S. branches. It’s commonly used by multinational corporations to bring executives, managers, or employees with specialized knowledge to the United States.
Types of L Visas
  • L-1A Visa: For executives or managers transferring to the U.S.
    • Initially granted for up to 1 year if opening a new office or up to 3 years for an existing office.
    • Extensions available up to 7 years.
  • L-1B Visa: For employees with specialized knowledge about the company’s products, services, or processes.
    • Typically granted for up to 1 year for a new office or 3 years for an existing office.
    • Extensions available up to 5 years.

Qualifying Relationship:
The U.S. and foreign companies must have a qualifying relationship, such as parent, subsidiary, branch, or affiliate.

Employment History:
The employee must have worked for the foreign company for at least 1 continuous year within the last 3 years before applying.

Intended Role in the U.S.:

  • L-1A: The employee must hold a managerial or executive role in the U.S.
  • L-1B: The employee must have specialized knowledge that is essential to the company’s operations.

Dual Intent:
L visa holders can apply for a green card while in the U.S.
Family Members:
Spouses and unmarried children under 21 can accompany the visa holder under L-2 status. Spouses are eligible to apply for work authorization.
New Office Option:
Companies can use the L visa to establish a new office in the U.S.
